A Proven Leader in Healthcare and Community Service

Dr. Stephen Tamang, M.D., MBA, is a physician, public health advocate, and dedicated community leader with over a decade of experience improving healthcare access and services in Rapid City. Since moving to Rapid City in 2014, he has developed a deep love for the community and is committed to making it a healthier, stronger place for all. He has worked at Monument Health in multiple roles, including as a family physician in outpatient clinics, a hospitalist managing inpatient care, and currently as the Medical Director of Addiction & Community Health, where he leads programs focused on addiction treatment and public health initiatives. In this role, he has led transformative initiatives—expanding addiction treatment, collaborating with local agencies, and mentoring the next generation of healthcare providers.

Beyond medicine, Stephen has a heart for service. As Board President of Journey On! and a Board Member at Cornerstone Rescue Mission, he actively works to support those experiencing homelessness, addiction, and healthcare inequities.

Why I'm Running

Rapid City deserves leadership that cultivates a strong, sustainable economy while safeguarding public health and enhancing the well-being of all residents. By prioritizing smart investments and strategic planning, we can build a thriving community where economic growth and public health go hand in hand.

Expanding Access to Healthcare

Focusing on metrics and benchmarks that actually move the needle—like the number of people successfully connected to medical care, mental health services, and addiction treatment. I'm also committed to helping residents enroll in every available state and federal safety net program, ensuring that no one falls through the cracks simply because the system is too hard to navigate.

Addressing Homelessness

My philosophy on homelessness is grounded in compassion and realism. We must provide emergency shelter as a basic safety net—no one should freeze to death. But real solutions go further, creating ladders out of homelessness through housing, healthcare, and jobs for those who seek help. At the same time, we must recognize that not everyone experiencing homelessness shares the same values or goals. Our aim should be dignity, independence, and the responsible use of resources.

Building a Safer, Healthier Community

I stand behind our dedicated first responders—including police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel—who work tirelessly to keep our community safe. I also commend the leadership of Police Chief Don Hedrick and Fire Chief Jason Culberson, and I’m committed to supporting them in achieving their goals for a safer, stronger Rapid City.

Strengthening Our Infrastructure - Investing in Roads, Parks, and Neighborhoods

Building a stronger Rapid City by improving streets, upgrading and maintaining parks, and revitalizing neighborhoods—smart investments that make daily life better for everyone. While growth is important, we also need to take care of the infrastructure we already have and keep it in good working order.

Support the Campaign

Rapid City deserves leadership that prioritizes the health, safety, and prosperity of all residents. Strong communities are built on smart investments that help those in need while ensuring taxpayer resources are used wisely and effectively. By promoting responsible solutions, we can create a healthier, more resilient city for everyone.
